Crass

About

Following his recent ‘Cute Melody, Window Down!’ LP on Local Action, as well as previous releases on Central Processing Unit, Hypercolour, and more 96 Back now turns his sights to Will Saul’s Aus Music. For his first appearance on the label, the Sheffield-based DJ/producer delivers four exceptionally produced, off-kilter, and wholly unique tracks sculpted for dark rooms and headphones in equal parts.
Leading the release, the title cut ‘Crass’ is a burst of leftfield energy, kicking off with twisted vocal samples, choppy drums, and warped synthesis throughout. ‘Syrup’ follows, with emotive atmospherics meeting metallic chords as sparse Grime-adjacent drums propel the track forward into a twinkling arpeggio sequence.
‘Tab Play’ brings bright stabs and punchy subs at breakneck pace, with subversive and restless percussion worming its way into the listener's brain. ‘Hoss It’ combines crunching kicks with wriggling synths as the track evolves throughout, heading into blissful yet suitably strange territories to round out this idiosyncratic release.
